Eat Black Eyed Peas Today?

It's kind of a Texas tradition to eat black eyed peas on New Years Day, but this year I did not get my full bowl until about 6pm. That is when my sister-in-law invited us over to eat and she had an abundant amount for everyone.

I'm not sure, but it seems like black eyed peas are not as popular as they once were. Maybe more people are eating out these days and most national restaurant chains do not offer black eyed peas on their regular menus.

Many 'Cotton Patch' restaurants do offer black eyed peas on their side order menu. Fortunately, a 'Cotton Patch' is just around the corner from where I live. While many folks only eat them once a year on New Years Day, I prefer to eat black eyed peas on a regular basis.

There are still a few hours left before January 1st, 2016 passes into history forever – so check those kitchen cabinets or stop by a local supermarket and fill up on the best tasting New Years tradition around. If you have time, pick up some cornbread and cold milk to eat with them.

Have You Seen It Yet?

If not, you are like me and in the minority. To date, 'Star Wars the Force Awakens' has earned $1.7 billion which makes it the 2nd largest grossing movie of all time worldwide. Only 'Avatar' has made more money.

Honestly, I have enjoyed space movies like 'Star Trek' more. But I do intend to see 'The Force Awakens' within the next two weeks. It's been difficult for friends not to talk about this movie when I'm around as not to give away a story-line most of them loved.

Star Wars: The Digital Movie Collection

It was sad last week when franchise creator George Lucas made disparaging comments about the direction Walt Disney took the movie in after paying billions to him for the privilege. Hey George, why not just take the money and keep your mouth shut?

With blockbuster flicks like 'Jurassic World' and 'The Force Awakens' released in 2015, I'm sure movie executives in Hollywood are hoping for another great year in 2016. Right now the only question I have before watching 'The Force Awakens' is, 2D or 3D?

Worst NFL Team Owner?

As the Dallas Cowboys end another dreadful season, many fans have been questioning who is to blame for another year of disappointing losses. It's true that injuries have hurt the Cowboys this season, but other NFL teams have also seen their fair share of those.

The news is filled with the usual choices of starting quarterback Tony Romo and head coach Jason Garrett. However if Cowboys fans are really honest, we know who is to blame for the team's terrible losing record and that person is owner Jerry Jones.

While Texas is filled with huge egos, few folks come close to having one as large as Jerry Jones. Is it too much to ask that fans get a winning team, while Jerry Jones becomes even richer? The real person who should be fired in the Dallas Cowboys organization is the only one who cannot be.

That is the reason why I am suggesting Jerry Jones is the worst team owner in the NFL. Jones' continues to confuse his ever increasing ego and wealth with what it will take to turn the team around on the football field. Hopefully, Jerry's son will do a better job when it's his turn to lead the team.

Wayne Rogers, Trapper John, Dead

It is with sadness that I report this morning the passing of Wayne Rogers. Millions of people knew him as Trapper John M.D. on the hit TV show in the late 1970's and 1980's called M.A.S.H.. He was 82-year-old and died from complications of pneumonia.

While Rogers only appeared during the first 3-seasons of M.A.S.H., he lived on for decades after the show became a worldwide hit in syndication. The on camera interaction between Trapper John and Hawkeye, Alan Alda, was absolutely amazing.

M*A*S*H: The Complete Series + Movie

The early years of M.A.S.H., the TV show, were some of the best when Alda and Rogers were joined by another key character 'Radar' played by Gary Burghoff. While there are many good television show still being made in Hollywood today, none hold a candle to the magic delivered by M.A.S.H. decades ago.

Some television viewers might remember Wayne Rogers in his later years when he was a frequent guest on financial television networks like CNBC and the Fox Business Network. When I saw him on these networks, it always brought a smile to my face because his face reminded me of my younger years and the television show M.A.S.H.. May he rest in peace.

Read New Rules Of Open Carry

The controversial new Texas law called 'Open Carry' goes into effect today. Here is the rundown of what will and will not change with this new law.

# 1. It authorizes residents to obtain a license to openly carry a handgun in the same places that allow the licensed carrying of concealed handguns.

#2. It requires openly displayed firearms, either loaded or unloaded, to be carried in a belt or shoulder holster.

#3. It allows those with a concealed handgun license to openly carry firearms with their existing license.

#4. It enables currently licensed gun owners to openly carry without additional training.

The main purpose of this new law is to provide additional protection to innocent citizens who might be trapped in an active shooter situation when law enforcement is not able to respond quickly enough to save lives. Supporters in favor of putting more guns into Texas society are strongly in favor of this new law, while gun opponents are completely against it.

Time will tell if this new 'Open Carry Law' in Texas will produce the results supporters hope. In the mean time, it is the law-of-the-land and let us all hope it does save lives in situations where law enforcement can not arrive at the scene of a crime in time.
