Do You Like This Couple?

Whether you do or not, it's clear that hundreds of thousands of folks from around the country enjoy watching Chip and Joanna Gains on their hit television show 'Fixer Upper' on HGTV. I arrived at this 'Fixer Upper' party late, but since discovering it one of my favorite pastimes on the weekends is watching this amazing young couple turn broken down trashy houses into works of art. Of course, the new shows premiere during the week – but from time to time the HGTV Network has a marathon where on a given Saturday afternoon, reruns are shown back to back.

Fixer Upper Season 1

After only two seasons, 'Fixer Upper' is the number one rated show on the HGTV cable network and from all appearances that growth trend will continue. City leaders in Waco say that Chip and Joanna are great for the local economy, because people come from all 50-states to shop at their retail locations and now they have added a new bed and breakfast - which will bring even more dollars to this Central Texas community. Local residents of Waco probably remember Joanna from years ago advertising her dad's business on television. Back then her name was Joanna Stevens and the name of her father's business was Jerry Steven Firestone located at Valley Mills and Lake Air Drive.

Denton Designated Driver Murdered

A young woman by the name of Sara Mutschlechner was shot-in-the-head and murdered on New Years morning 2016 in Denton. The shooting occurred around 2am in the 1700 block of N. Elm. Muschlechner, along with friends, were celebrating the New Year when some type of altercation occurred between the people in the vehicle she was driving and an SUV. After attempting to drive away, someone in the SUV shot at the vehicle Mutschlechner was driving and hit her in the head. The really terrible part of this story is that since Muschlechner was not drinking, her friends picked her as the designated driver.

Murder in the Stacks: Penn State, Betsy Aardsma, and the Killer Who Got Away

When I learn of tragic stories like this one, I think back to my own youth in the 1970's. At that time, altercations were a part of life. But I do not remember anyone pulling out a gun to kill someone else just because they were mad. In fact, in the rural Texas town that was my home until I was 18-years-old – most young men carried firearms in their vehicles, but none of them even thought about pulling it out to shoot another person in anger. Back then when we had an issue with someone else, it was settled with words or perhaps a few fists to the face. The world has changed so much over the past three or four decades and when I read stories like this one, I just shake my head.

Most Hated Man In State?

It's pretty clear right now that the most hated man in the state of Texas is Ethan Couch. After getting a slap on the wrist when he killed 4-people in a DUI accident years ago, he and his mother fled to Mexico when pictures were released showing him drinking alcohol in clear violation of his probation.

Now Ethan's lawyers are up to even more crazy stuff after petitioning Mexico to keep him is jail there because his civil rights have been violated. It's just matter of time before Couch is returned to the United States. While it is unlikely he will ever received the punishment he deserves for killing those folks while driving drunk, it's impossible to run forever from karma – so one day he will definitely get what's coming to him one way or another. Right now though, he is making all Texans look bad as he works every last nerve of the criminal justice system.
