Millions of hard earned dollars are stolen each year during tax season by con artists who threaten folks by claiming they owe money to the IRS and demanding immediate payment. The first thing you should remember is that the IRS does not call taxpayers who are delinquent on their taxes. Instead they send a letter in the mail first outlining what you owe and giving you an opportunity to set up a payment plan. You also have the right to dispute amounts they say you owe, if you feel their computations are in error. If one of these scam artist call you, the best advice is to hang up the telephone. If you are concerned the call was the real deal, simply call the IRS yourself. Their number is listed in all major telephone directories. Under no circumstances should you give out private information to anyone who calls you claiming to be from the IRS. Be safe.
