Man Died After EMS Injected Him With Sedative

The Galveston County Sheriff's Office has launched an investigation after a suspect died on the way to the hospital Friday night.

Deputies say Jeronimo Zamora Jr., 46, stopped breathing in an ambulance after EMS crews injected him with a sedative to calm him down.

Investigators say Zamora's girlfriend called 911 just before midnight to report that he was screaming and had a knife in his hand.

When deputies arrived at the home on Avenue H, they said they spotted Zamora standing outside yelling and noticed a large gash on his arm.

When they tried to help him, deputies said he struggled and even tried to grab one of their guns. Officers had to spray him with pepper spray.

Once they had him under control, investigators said EMS crews administered a sedative to Zamora so he could be safely transported to the hospital.

Paramedics attempted CPR when he stopped breathing inside the ambulance but could not revive him.

Wedding Guest Killed During East Texas Tornado

It was a joyful day that ended up being a day of sorrow.

Friends and family spent the day preparing for a wedding that was to take place Saturday evening outside of a family home on Van Zandt County Road 2301, southwest of Canton.

Several dozen people were on the grounds, including a few people who had gone into a detached garage about 100 yards from the main home to check out some race cars being worked on.

Reba Billingsley, a family friend, said she was arranging roses on the wedding cake when she was summoned to the home to take photos of the bridal party getting ready for the ceremony.

“I think I got two pictures of the bride and a couple pictures of the bridal party getting ready, and they said ‘Boy the wind is picking up,’“ she said. “And we looked and a tree came flying by the window.”

The homeowner, she said, builds storm shelters for a living, so the home had a large, bunker-like storm shelter.

“Everyone just started yelling ‘Get into the bunker!’” she said. “We had no warning. They say ‘it sounds like a train,’ but it didn’t. The wind started blowing and that was it.”

The group didn’t make it to the bunker in time, and she said they were forced to take shelter in an interior hallway.

Much of what happened after that moment is a blur for Billingsley, and she pauses often while telling her story. She speaks about trying to get herself and others to safety and of everyone frantically trying to find the children who had been playing nearby just moments before.

“As we were running, the roof and the walls were coming off,” Billingsley said, indicating with her hands how the walls were bowing outward. “The house was just like Lego blocks being thrown up.”

Canton's Rustic Barn Destroyed By Tornado

An evening meant to be spent in celebration turned into chaos as a tornado ripped through a prom venue in Canton.

Reagan Sumner, owner of the Rustic Barn venue off of FM 1255 in Canton, said two tornadoes hit his property at about 4:45 p.m. Saturday evening.

“I own about 400 acres,” he explained. “And you can tell where it all went through.”

He was at his home just a few hundred yards away from the venue, when a tornado tore through his garage, missing his home by inches.

“We looked in the sky to the south and we could see twisting in the tree line. We didn’t even know the first tornado was going to hit, because we didn’t get the alert until right before. So the barn gets destroyed, and that’s when we came down here when the second one hit.”

Around 20 people, including young children, were inside the venue setting up the Edgewood High School prom, which was planned to take place around 7 p.m. Saturday night.

As the tornado tore through, everyone became trapped inside, taking cover in bathrooms and closets.

Texas Voter Fraud Or Mistaken Identity?

When a 27-year-old woman went to cast her ballot Monday in Sullivan City, poll workers walked her straight to the voting booth.

But when a strikingly similar looking woman — with the same brown eyes, the same brown hair and the same birthday — arrived Tuesday, they became suspicious. Poll workers accused her of attempting to vote twice.

The controversy prompted the Hidalgo County Elections Department to file an incident report with the District Attorney’s Office last week.

Any investigation will attempt to answer two questions: Did the woman who voted Monday attempt to vote again on Tuesday? Or were poll workers confused by identical twins?

“They were saying I went two times,” said Belen Escalera, standing next to her twin sister Belinda. “When they know we’re twins.”

Belen and Belinda Escalera both graduated from La Joya High School. They’re both 5 feet tall with brown hair and brown eyes. And they both live on the same street in Sullivan City.

Telling them apart, though, isn’t tricky.

Belen just had a baby and she’s slightly heavier than Belinda, who has a small mole above her lip.

Belen also has tattoos on her neck; Belinda doesn’t.
