Texas Man (CHL) Pulls Gun To Protect Himself

“He was talking about his niece, how he disrespected his niece,” Benitez recalled. And, obviously, he was really upset. He was ready to fight. The guy, he was literally right there. The other guy, you could tell he was either scared or didn't want any problems.”

Sensing something was about to go down, Benitez pulled out his cell phone to record the video on Snapchat. That’s when Benitez says the man, who was sitting on the bench, pulled out a gun.

“By the time I started recording, I looked on my camera. I looked up and the guy had his gun out. And at that split second, I was like I need to get my daughter,” Benitez said. “I pick her up. I grab my stepdaughter and put them behind a concrete post and told them to stay there.”

According to Mansfield police, the man who had the gun is licensed to carry in the state of Texas. And after speaking to witnesses, investigators say he pointed the gun at the other man, who police are calling the "aggressor," after being lifted up from the bench and hit in the face and torso.

Lubbock School Board President Collier Resigns

Melissa Collier announced her resignation from the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees today in a letter to fellow board members. Collier was elected to an at-large position on the board in 2010, and she was selected as president by her peers in 2016. Collier’s current term expires in May 2020.

Collier, co-owner of Collier Construction and mother of two Lubbock ISD students, said the resignation comes at a time when demands on her time as the co-owner of a growing business and a very involved parent make it more difficult to serve in a third role as an elected official.

"My own children will be making transitions into middle school and high school, and I need to balance their needs with my role as a business owner. Things are going very well in Lubbock ISD, and I think this is a good time to hand the reins to someone else," Collier said. "I feel very good about the outstanding educational opportunities being offered to students in Lubbock ISD, and I am proud of the work done by the administration and my colleagues on the board," she added.

Gun Application Fees Reduced From $140 To $40

The cost to get a gun license in the state is about to be a whole lot cheaper for those interested in becoming gun owners.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill dropping the application fee from $140 to $40. In addition, the change decreased the renewal fee from $70 to $40 and waived fees for police officers and Texas military.

People looking to obtain a concealed hand gun license need to take a class.

Brian Guerra, owner of Lone Star Guns in Harlingen, has hosted a concealed handgun license class for the past 15 years.

Guerra said his business sees, on average, 15 to 20 people a month.

“We normally do see an increase anytime there’s any type of change with licenses and stuff… We should see a surge in the amount of applicants and the amount of attendees to the classes,” he said.

Guerra said the primary reason people don’t take the class in the first place is because of the cost.

“You’re looking at, in most cases, $100 class fee that the instructor will charge. Then you’re looking at what was $140 licensing fee. So, you’re looking at $240 just to get the person licensed,” he explained.

He said the lower fee will open the door for more people who are interested in learning about guns.

Navy SEAL Remington Peters Died This Weekend

A U.S. Navy SEAL died after his parachute failed to open properly during a Fleet Week demonstration on Sunday.

Thousands of spectators were watching the show when the tragedy occurred at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Four navy seal parachute jumpers leaped out over Jersey City. Only three made it down safely.

“We heard a smack against the water. Then, we saw the Coast Guard boat come flying out and a Jersey City Marine unit and then we noticed someone was in the water,” said Eric Rosen, who witnessed the incident.

The Navy SEAL, who has been identified as Remington Peters, was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, and I ask for all of your prayers for the Navy SEAL community who lost a true patriot today,” said Rear Adm. Jack Scorby, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.

The four men are part of an elite parachute jumping team called The Leap Frogs. They were in the area to celebrate Fleet Week for the Memorial Day weekend. The jump over Liberty Park was one of several jumps they had been conducting over the past few days.

Little Texan Baby Tenley Got Her Heart Transplant

Texas Children's Hospital joined the ranks of three other hospitals last week for surpassing 1,500 transplants.

One of them was a lifesaving heart transplant for Tenley Kennedy.

Baby Tenley was the inspiration for the Texas Children's music therapist's "heartbeat songs.

Tenley's broken heart provided the beat for one of the songs.

On May 10, Tenley got the heart transplant she had been waiting for, performed by Dr. Carlos Mery.

"We weren't getting any better. I mean, her heart function had gotten better but she wasn't. She still needed a heart and it's a scary time, so just to know that wait is finally over is just -- a burden is lifted off of your chest," Kelly Kennedy said.

13-Pound Bullfrog Caught In Batesville Texas

A man in Texas caught a monster-sized frog, and the photos are going viral online.

According to the South Texas Hunting Association’s Facebook page, Markcuz Rangel is the man who captured the giant bull frog last Wednesday. The frog was caught in a fishing pond in Batesville in south Texas.

A spokesman for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department told the Houston Chronicle that the photo is real and not photoshopped. However, the spokesman said the picture is a little misleading.

"It's not as bigly as it appears," spokesman Steve Lightfoot said. "[It's an] optical illusion created by extending frog toward the camera – similar to what you see with fishermen holding up fish to make them appear larger. Still a big bullfrog, though."

This is how the South Texas Hunting Association captioned the photo on Facebook: "Markcuz Rangel - Wanted to share a monster bull frog we got yesterday afternoon at one of our fishing ponds in South texas ranch located in Batesville tx 13lb monster frog!"

Group Wants Statue Of Sam Houston Removed

The Sam Houston statue has been at Hermann Park since 1925, but a group that calls itself Texas Antifa has started a campaign to take down this and any other landmark that bears the name Sam Houston.

The statue has been a site to see for nearly a century and for some people, it's a site they want to see for years to come.

"Honestly, I think they should keep it up. Yeah," Nicole Nelson said.

But Texas Antifa group members want the Sam Houston statue gone.

On Thursday, the group posted on its Facebook page saying, "Texans agree the disgusting idols of America's dark days of slavery must be removed to bring internal peace to our country."

The group also suggested Mayor Sylvester Turner should back the removal of the statue, because of his ethnicity and political affiliation.

Randall Stephenson Highest Paid CEO In Texas

The telco’s CEO Randall Stephenson did well last year — making $28.4 million, a 13.1% increase — according to the company’s proxy, submitted today to the SEC. But that’s still less than the $31.5 million that his potential underling, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, made in 2015.

Stephenson’s 2016 package included $1.8 million salary, $16.1 million in stock awards, $5.7 million in non-equity incentives, $3.5 million change in pension value, and $1.4 million in other compensation, The “other” category included $1.2 million from the company’s matching contribution to his 401(k) plan.

Unlike most media executives, Stephenson reimburses the company for the incremental cost of his personal use of AT&T’s aircraft. (Time Warner paid $165,625 for Bewkes’ aircraft use in 2015.) The board gave the CEO 133% of his performance share payout after the company hit its financial and three-year stock targets.

Forney Softball Team Remembers Emily Galiano

A Forney High School softball team, playing for a fallen teammate, closed out their season Saturday in the regional finals against The Colony.

The team lost 4 to 7, but have been playing in honor of Emily Galiano who died may 16th. Though the team had a disappointing end to the season, there were moments of victory and a home run in the 6th inning that put the team back in the game.

The team says each one of those moments was for Emily Galiano, their angel in the outfield. It was everything they'd worked for.

“Each one of these girls was affected and they're out there playing. I couldn't do that. Most adults can't even do that,” said Connie Ivy who attended the game.

Galiano died after a teammate accidentally backed over her after a team dinner. Faced with the decision to quit or keep playing, the team decided to continue on with the Galiano family's blessing. Emily was right there with them every step of the way, her #6 carried on by people in the stands, and on their helmets.

“Emily was watching over us. We wanted to finish the season for her, and the kids did. They honored her,” said Coach Pat Eitel.

Two people escaped their Brownwood home before it was destroyed by fire Saturday.

Just before Noon, about 20 firefighters responded to the home on the corner of Waco and Maple streets. It took them about an hour to get the flames under control, according to Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston.

"The center of the house collapsed and it came down on both side," Preston said. "We have been busy the last few days."

Preston said it will be difficult to determine a cause for the fire.

Same Texas Teacher, Different Mock Award

After a Houston teacher sparked national outrage by giving a student a mock award at the end of the school year naming her “most likely to become a terrorist,” others have come forward to claim they received insensitive “awards.”

Initial reports of the award given to Lizeth Villanueva made headlines with the Associated Press, BuzzFeed News, USA Today and the Dallas Morning News on Thursday and Friday, as commenters blasted the teacher’s “poor attempt to poke fun,” as the school district characterized it. At the time, the school said the teacher would be disciplined but declined to say how.

Caesar is black, as is the teacher, according to CNN. Earlier in the year, the teacher also gave Caesar a ‘black quiz’ to prove how black she was, according to the girl’s sister, Lauren Easton.

Malware At Chipotle Allowed Credit Card Breach

Chipotle announced Friday that their payment systems were breached by hackers, leading to customers' card data, including its number, expiration date and internal verification codes being stolen.

The breach collected what is called track data, which is produced each time a customer swipes their credit card through a point-of-service device. Pizzeria Locale restaurants were also affected. Chipotle has since removed the malware from the hack and is working with cyber security teams to improve safety.

The hack also comes one year after the crippling E. coli outbreak that sent Chipotle into a major slump.

Check Out This Cool New Braunfels Police Car

The New Braunfels Police Department has a set of attention-grabbing hot wheels, courtesy of a drug dealer.

The department unveiled the Corvette police cruiser, Coptomus Prime, on Facebook Friday morning hoping to clarify any misconceptions the community may have about the car.

The department stated the car was actually not as new as many may think, having hit the road with New Braunfels Police Department logos in 2015 after it was seized from a drug dealer.

While the department has made good use of the car, from parades to school visits, the ultimate goal is to auction off the car. The money from that auction will ne used to further other community outreach programs, the department said in a Facebook post.

Soldier Returns From Vietnam 52-Years Later

Deborah Crosby touched her father's flag-draped casket as her three brothers hugged her in a tearful embrace on the tarmac at the San Diego airport Friday - ending a more than half century search to find and bring home the remains of Lt. Cmdr. Frederick P. Crosby, shot down as a Navy pilot in the Vietnam War.

Deborah Crosby, now 58, was only six when she was sent home from the first grade to learn her father was presumed dead, though his body had not been found.

Her mother could never talk about that day, but she gave Crosby and her brothers a binder with articles about her father's plane zooming low through the clouds on a bomb damage assessment mission before it was gunned down by North Vietnamese ground forces in 1965. The 31-year-old pilot was armed only with cameras, his daughter said.

Crosby and her grandmother made a pact to someday bring home her father's remains and bury him in his hometown of San Diego.

A year ago, military investigators found his remains in a fish pond in north Vietnam. On Friday, Deborah Crosby fulfilled her promise to her late grandmother.

Passengers watched through the windows of a Delta Air Lines jet as the flag-draped casket was removed from the hold by six sailors.

Deborah Crosby walked forward, touched the casket and embraced her three brothers. The aviator's elderly sister, Sharon, and brother, David, also hugged, and he wiped an eye.

"I'm just overwhelmed with seeing the plane drive up and all of the uniforms and all of the respect and the honors that he's receiving," Deborah Crosby said.

The sailors saluted before the casket left in a hearse.

Senate Approves Guns In Locked Cars At Schools

Texas lawmakers have voted to allow handgun permit holders to have guns in their parked cars outside schools.

The Senate gave final approval to the measure Saturday, sending it to Gov. Greg Abbott for his consideration. The vote came a day after Abbott signed into law a sharp decrease in fees paid to obtain a handgun license.

The bill allowing guns in parked cars at schools is aimed at teachers and school workers who want to keep their weapons in their vehicles without violating state law. Opponents worry it raises the potential for danger if a car is burglarized on school property.
