Deadly Super Bug Common In Houston Texas

A major American city abounds in one particular superbug, a study found.

Researchers at Houston Methodist Hospital discovered that more than one-third of the Houston patients they studied were infected with a strain of the antibiotic-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae.

The pathogen is one of the most common causes of patient infection. A woman in Nevada died from an untreatable Klebsiella pneumoniae infection this year.

Scientists don't know why so many cases were found in the nation's fourth-largest city, but they are studying it. The greater Houston area has a population of about 6 million.

"Finding the otherwise uncommon strain in our city was a very surprising discovery," said James M. Musser, senior author and chair of the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at the Houston Methodist Research Institute and Houston Methodist Hospital. "Because Klebsiella pneumoniae is a common and important cause of human infections, we urgently need to identify potential vaccine targets or other new treatments, and develop new and rapid diagnostic techniques."

Researchers used genome sequencing to study more than 1,700 strains that caused infections in patients over a four-year period.

Allyson Talbott, Rogers High, Robbed Of Honor

A Central Texas student claims she was denied Valedictorian by a slim margin after a clerical error by a nearby community college resulted in a dual credit grade being incorrectly provided to her high school.

Allyson Talbott is a senior at Rogers High School in Bell County, Texas, where she took dual credit courses at Temple College. In addition to her athletic accomplishments as a high school cheerleader, Talbott found time to complete her associate's degree through Temple college before her scheduled Rogers ISD graduation on May 25.

But, Talbott claims a dual credit grade of 97.5 was incorrectly marked as 92 by Temple College. And, when the incorrect grade was provided to her high school, it made the .075 point difference that ranked her Salutatorian instead of Valedictorian.

"This is utterly wrong and disrespectful," said Talbott in a Facebook post. "I was fine with being number two, but after realizing my grade was calculated incorrectly and the school is refusing to recalculate it, I am beyond mad."

7-Year-Old Dallas Boy Handcuffed At School

The family of a 7-year-old boy with special needs wants answers about why their child was handcuffed at school.

A photo of the child in handcuffs went viral. Dallas ISD responded that the restraints were used to prevent the child from hurting himself. But the family says that doesn't explain everything.

The 7-year-old boy is once again in the custody of his family. His mother, grandmother and their attorney got the news of his release Monday afternoon.

The family says now comes the task of demanding answers about what happened on May 9 at Gabe B. Allen Charter School to warrant handcuff on their little boy.

The photo has circulated and drawn tons of attention on social media of the 7-year old student in handcuffs standing between two DISD police officers.

His mother says she was called to go pick up her son from his school last Tuesday. She says it had become a familiar routine as her son is a special needs student and often has episodes causing him to act out. But last week, she says administrators told her he'd been taken to a mental facility to prevent harm to himself and to others.

Doctor Denton Cooley's House Is For Sale

It is one of the hottest new listings on the market, and it has both heart and a place in Houston's hall of fame for its honored owner.

The home's nearly 7,000 square feet of space is perfect for entertaining, and the Cooley family made use of it. Craddock recalled playing billiards with their father and throwing parties featuring Houston-area notables like Billy Gibbons in the years before ZZ Top.
