"Let him know that Texas is coming to his rescue," Abbott tweeted to more than 150,000 followers. "We'll work to protect him and put an end to this."

Investigators, though, don't actually know who committed the crime. They haven't identified a motive. And any connection between the robbery and border security remains a mystery.

At roughly 6:30 p.m. Friday, 80-year-old Homero Guzman stopped for dinner at the Church's Chicken restaurant near the intersection of South 10th Street and Galveston Avenue.

"He parked right by the restaurant doors," said Luevano, 25, the South Texas regional director for the Republican Party of Texas. "He parked where there was lighting."

A man approached Guzman and pulled a gun. Speaking in Spanish, the man asked whether or not Guzman was a United States citizen, Luevano said. He demanded Guzman's ID and wallet.

Texas' Transgender Bathroom Bill Simply Explained

At the Texas Capitol in Austin, battle lines are sharpening around one of this year’s biggest fights over social issues. It’s a battle over bathrooms, specifically which bathrooms transgender people should be allowed to use.

Supporters and opponents have already been lobbing attacks. Here’s what you need to know.

The bills take different forms in different places, but all of them in one way or another limit or prohibit transgender people from using bathrooms of their choice. In North Carolina, for example, it’s illegal to use the bathroom that doesn’t match the sex marked on one’s birth certificate.

"In Texas, the proposed legislation is a bit more limited. Senate Bill 6, proposed by Texas Sen. Lois Kolkhorst, would mandate that transgender people use bathrooms, locker rooms or other sex-segregated intimate spaces in public schools, government buildings and public universities based on 'biological sex' instead of their gender identity. It does not mandate what private businesses or entities can and can’t do.

"The bill would also block local nondiscrimination ordinances that guarantee transgender people the right to use the facilities that matches their gender identity."

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Romo is open to “massaging” his current contract in order to to provide salary cap relief for a contending team that might be willing to trade for him. Romo’s base salary for 2017 is a reasonable $14 million, but his salary cap hits for the next three seasons average around $25 million. Finding a way to get that number down might help facilitate a deal.
