16-Arlington Police Officers Surrender Licenses

Five Arlington police officers indicted on charges of falsely reporting traffic stops had their cases dismissed this week in exchange for permanently surrendering their state peace officer licenses, according to court records.

Eleven other officers involved in the investigation had previously agreed to surrender their licenses so that their cases would not go before a grand jury, said Sam Jordan, spokeswoman for the Tarrant County district attorney’s office.

“They will never be able to be peace officers in Texas again,” Jordan said of the 16 officers, who made up about 2 percent of the city’s 600 officers.

During their search, they were shot multiple times by at least one armed suspect.

"Two of our officers actually jumped the fence and went into that backyard to clear that storage shed when a male Hispanic suspect opened the door, came out and opened fire on our officers," Acevedo said. "Officers were able to return gunfire."

Munoz was taken to Ben Taub Hospital with non-life threatening injuries to his foot.
Cortez, who was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, was in critical condition. He was reportedly able to visit briefly with his wife, but a bullet is lodged close to his spine.

One of the burglary suspects died, while the other fled the scene and has still not been found.

"Officer Munoz, of course, received a wound to his foot. He will be released at some point today so we're very grateful for that. And then officer Cortez is in stable condition. They have now removed the bullet that's close to his spine. And, you know, we must continue to pray for him and his entire family. For both of these individuals. Of course, two suspects, one is dead and one is still on the run. But we are sparing nothing to find the other person," Turner said.

Lawsuit Filed After Little Girl Died At Dentist

A new lawsuit filed Tuesday claims the dental procedures that cost an Austin girl her life were both "painful" and "unnecessary."

The lawsuit was filed by Daisy Torres' parents against Austin Children's Dentistry, the office's owner/manager, the dentist and anesthesiologist who treated her.

In March 2016, 14-month-old Daisy Lynn Torres was put under anesthesia and died. Her parents say a dentist at Austin Children's Dentistry first told them Daisy had two cavities, but after starting the procedure returned to the waiting room to report Daisy had six cavities and needed four root canals and four crowns. Shortly after beginning the procedure, the situation turned critical.

"When the EMS came, they told me to give her a kiss bye before putting her on ambulance," said Betty Squier, Daisy's mother, in an interview in March 2016. "They told me when they brought her to the hospital that she had already been brain dead, " Squier said.

Kidnapping Claims Were Totally False

Police were in the process of obtaining arrest warrants Tuesday evening for a half-dozen people after determining that a report that a Killeen toddler was kidnapped was not only false, but also that the toddler didn’t exist at all.

Police were told that Jamal Powell, 3, was abducted by a man and a woman during the late night hours on Feb. 11 from a home in the 4800 block of Golden Gate Drive.

The report led to a major search that involved law enforcement agencies stretching from Central Texas to Indiana.

“Through the investigation it was determined that the report of Jamal Powell being kidnapped was false,” police said in a press release Tuesday night.

“The reporting parties fabricated the identity of Jamal Powell in an attempt to get a faster response from local law enforcement; there was never a child,” police said.

Officers were told on Feb. 11 that a man and a woman took money and a vehicle at gunpoint and escaped with the youngster.

“The report of a gun being involved in this case is also fictitious,” police said Wednesday night.
