Fleeing Shoplifter Hit By Vehicle In Corpus

Drivers headed West on South Padre Island Drive rolled up on a gruesome scene Tuesday afternoon. A man trying to run across the freeway only made it across several lanes before he was hit by an SUV in the fast lane.

Traffic backed up along S.P.I.D. as police blocked the section between Everhart and Airline for an hour and a half, investigating the scene where the man was struck.

"You could hear it from Bealls, you know, that's how loud it was," said Charlie Garcia.

Garcia was shopping at Bealls and says he saw the Hispanic man in his fifties in the department store.

"He was grabbing items and he was trying to steal them," Garcia said.

Garcia says the man put those items in a backpack. Police also suspect the man was shoplifting.

"There was contact with the individual for that theft, and I guess as the contact was made with him he fled," said Lt. Israel Soza with the Corpus Christi Police Department.
