George Strait Given 2017 Texas State Honor

The Lone Star State is honoring county music superstar and San Antonio resident George Strait.

Strait, who was born in the town of Poteet, has been named the 2017 Texas State Musician by the Texas Commission on the Arts. The TCA calls Strait "the undeniable King of Country Music.” Strait has had 60 number 1 singles, more than any other artist in any genre, according to the TCA. He's also had 33 platinum or multi-platinum-selling albums and is the only act in history to have a Top 10 hit every year for over three decades. He's sold more than 70 million albums and has received more than 60 major entertainment industry awards.

The Texas State Legislature will make the appointment on Thursday, May 18th. Other 2017 appointees include Texas Poet Laureate Jenny Browne of San Antonio, Texas State Two-Dimensional Artist Kermit Oliver of Waco, and Texas State Three-Dimensional Artist Beverly Penn of Austin.
