1st Anniversary Of Lockhart Hot Air Balloon Disaster

Friends and relatives of 16 people killed a year ago Sunday when a hot air balloon crashed in Central Texas have marked the anniversary with a church service and memorial flowers.

A few dozen people attended a church service Saturday and then went to the site of the July 30, 2016, crash near Lockhart, about 30 miles (48.28 kilometers) south of Austin.

The crash remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. The balloon struck some power lines before plunging into a pasture.

Medical experts testified at a December hearing in Washington that the pilot, Alfred "Skip" Nichols, was taking medications that should have precluded him from flying and that he took the 15 passengers up in the balloon despite knowing the weather wasn't good.

Man Made Video In Haunted Texas Hotel Room

video

Video of a man's seemingly otherworldly encounter at a South Texas motel room is going viral, but some say the man who recorded his experience is pulling a fast one on more than 1 million people who watched the video.

Corpus Christi resident Frank Ramirez posted the video on Friday saying, "IDK what it is, but I know it was here. You be the judge. Hotel in Harlingen, Tx."

In the nearly 6-minute video, a phone comes off its hook, a towel is yanked off a bathroom counter and a hanger moves -- all of this without anyone touching the items.

Ramirez said he started recording after the third time the phone was yanked off the hook. He said he stays at the Country Side Inn often because he works in Harlingen. On this particular occasion, Ramirez was assigned room 38.

"It's never happened to me before in the hotel -- never experienced anything like that," Ramirez said

Before telling those who had watched the video which room he stayed in, Ramirez said a woman from San Antonio messaged him on Facebook saying she had stayed in room 38 and woke up "with her face scratched up."

Texas Police Officer Hit By Suspected Drunk Driver

Officer Matt Lesell is very fortunate to be alive and he knows it. He now wants to help others through raising awareness and sharing their story.

Dash cam video captured the agonizing moments after Lesell was hit by a suspected drunk driver and hurled into the air on July 7 around 3 a.m. He landed in the middle of the freeway.

“Every time I watch it, I'm shocked and amazed that I was able to walk away the way I could,” he said. “It definitely wasn't a normal walk. I hobbled and was able to get up and out. But I was amazed the damage wasn't more severe."

Officer Lesell is now talking out about the crash to raise awareness about the perils of drinking and driving. He says the timing of what happened to him underscores a safety campaign called "Slow Down and Move Over."

Lesell is on the mend for at least several more weeks. His wife, Danielle, is an ER nurse. She was home sleeping when he called her from the scene. Understandably, she says watching the video is tough.

“There really aren't any words to explain what it feels like,” she said. “You watch that and it’s the same fear and the feeling and adrenaline jump you get from the initial phone call."

Over 100 Animals Rescued From Texas Home

Keller police seized 111 animals from a home that police say had no air conditioning or water. They were found on Tuesday when temperatures were in the mid-90s.

Investigators say 27 dogs and 84 cats were seized there were dehydrated. They are now looking at whether criminal charges could be filed against the homeowner.

The Humane Society is giving the animals plenty of water, food, air conditioning and any medical help if needed. Workers say they're glad they found them when they did.

Sandy Shelby with The Humane Society of North Texas described the condition the animals were found in as completely inhumane.

Keller police and animal control got a call from neighbors in the 300 block of Anita complaining about the smell coming from a home.

Daily Facebook Photos: 1 2 3 4 5

Tina Harkness lives next door. She says it just seemed to get worse over the last year.

“The flies is what we noticed most,” she said. “We would catch wind of it depending on which way the wind blew, and it was just awful urine, the cat urine and feces."

Police and animal control officers say when they walked up they found a van in the driveway filled with dogs.

"The van was not running. The windows were rolled up and just cracked a tiny little bit,” Shelby said. “There were 14 crates full of animals inside."

The Humane Society says a relative of the homeowner wouldn't let them inside so officers came back about an hour later with a warrant.

The two individuals who were found are dead after what police believe to be a murder-suicide situation at Lake Waco have been identified.

Police identified the individuals as 47-year-olds Twila and William Mooney.

The families have been made aware of their deaths.

According to witnesses who knew the victims, the pair were only married a short period of time. Residents in the area said they heard gunshots at some point last night, but thought nothing of them.

Coffee Recalled Because Of Viagra Type Ingredient

Coffee from a North Texas company is being recalled for containing an ingredient similar to Viagra, the FDA says.

Bestherbs Coffee LLC, in Grand Prairie, voluntarily recalled all of its "New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Herbs Coffee" after an FDA lab analysis detected desmethyl carbodenafil.

The drug is structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, according to the FDA notice.

Desmethyl carbodenafil may react with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, lowering blood pressure to dangerous levels, the recall said. The drug poses a risk to men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease.

The instant coffee packs also include milk, which is a potential allergen not included on the labels.

The coffee was sold nationwide online. Each box sold comes with 25, 13-gram packs of coffee.

People who've bought the coffee can return it to the Bestherbs office for a full refund. The address is listed below:

Pastor Richard "Dick" Lord Died From West Nile Virus

The first victim of West Nile virus in Tarrant County this year was a retired Arlington pastor who was active and "full of life," his family said Tuesday.

Richard "Dick" Lord, 82, had diabetes but overall was in good health until he started feeling sick on July 4, said his longtime wife, Janice Lord.

"He was so full of life in every way and he went through 12 days of hell to be able to leave us," she said.

He ended up going to the emergency room at Arlington Memorial Hospital. But at first, doctors weren't sure what was wrong.

"I'm thinking these are great doctors, and they are going to figure it out and get him fixed," Janice Lord said. "I never thought about it being that (West Nile virus) or killing him."

Then, as his condition worsened, doctors discovered he had West Nile, the virus passed on by mosquitoes.
